(Telephone ringing in an empty room)
–Pick it up, pick it up…
Then I wonder
outloud, where is she?
–Don’t leave me alone
I am lonely tonight; the red lights have
begun to flicker up and down on the
other side of the town–
I begin to
wonder outloud where are you? Do you have
guests crowding your house, while the telephone
rings pathetically? Or are have you
gone someplace abroad to find a potion
to cure your wounds as your home grows senseless?

I know the night is waxing under a
descending moon and stars are lost in the
rolling waves of future oceans, and the
headlights of passing cars rarely appear,
But could you please, answer the telephone,
perhaps we could speak without dramatic
dialogues and I promise that I will
speak without monologues, just simple talk
and wish each other, “Happy birthday!”

I want to, in case you all were wondering.

Here is my pastel version of Vermeer’s “The Girl With A Pearl Earring”, it was lots of fun to do. He handles lights and darks so delicately, that I thought to look to his works for insight into how to treat value differences, and it was definitely educational. It was only a little messy.
